- Abstract
With the development of the activated sludge and other methods of sewage treatment, the use of trickling filters has been somewhat neglected of late. Yet there any many situations where their simplicity and reliability without expert attention render them particularly suitable for service. In this article the author sets forth the basic requirements for design and construction of efficient trickling filters, and discusses in a general way the principles of action of such filters, giving illustrations from practice. The main factors influencing satisfactory operations are shown to be distribution of the sewage in thin layers, and adequate ventilation of all parts of the filter.
