Abstract

In the concluding section of his article, Mr. Darwin quotes practical applications of the principles evolved from soil research. Examples are given of the admixture of sand with clay soils to form a far more stable road surface than could otherwise be obtained without considerable expense. Stabilisation of washed gravel by addition of silty loam, and stabilisation of plastic loam by addition of gravel are also quoted. Reference is then made to methods of moisture stabilisation, as used in other countries. Data are given regarding waterproofing tests made on the Murray Valley highway, and the question of surface sealing with bitumen is dealt with and examples quoted. In conclusion, a general reference is made to road design problems.
