- Abstract
In this section of his article the author deals in some detail with characteristics of some of the soils found in various parts of Victoria, classifying them according to the system previously set forth. The soils described include red quartz gravel from Mangalore, soils of granitic origin from Harcourt and Cohuna, "swamp cement" from northern Victoria, silts from Gippsland and Mt. Dandenong, marl from the Mallee and the south-western coast, and loams from the Heytesbury district. In each case the soil characteristics are described, and the effects of its use as road surfacing material are discussed. The important point is brought forward that, with proper treatment, even an "inferior" material can be made to give reasonably good service on roads.
