- Abstract
The new bridge recently constructed across the Leven river, in Northern Tasmania, is of the composite slab and girder type developed by the Tasmanian Public Works Department, and fully justifies the faith of the department in this economical type of structure. The substructure consists of piers of reinforced concrete piles, and across these rest girders consisting of 24-in. by 7-1/2-in. rolled steel joists with cover plate on the top and bottom flange rigidly bonded in, through special welded-on reinforcement, with the bridge deck slab. In this construction the steel takes all tension and the concrete slab takes compression, this sharing of the load resulting in pronounced economy of material. The article describes the design and construction of the bridge in some detail, and concludes with a schedule of total and unit costs.
