- Abstract
This article describes the design and construction of an experimental road bridge of 34-ft span near Hobart, Tasmania. The principal feature of the bridge is that the concrete deck is constructed on steel joists instead of with the usual concrete tee beams. The joist are firmly bonded to the deck by means of welded reinforcement, and the design provides a remarkably simple and economical bridge. The article briefly discusses the theory behind the design and shows how construction was affected in a manner that resulted in the joists carrying their due proportion of both dead and live load.
