- Abstract
This address reflects on Man's progress through the ages, the coming of modern science, the problems for the future engineer, Australia's need of population, and industrial development. The critical role of scientific research and development in advancing Australia's industrial and national progress is discussed, emphasising the importance of developing natural resources, utilising waste products, improving industrial processes, and addressing production challenges to stimulate secondary industries. Examples include the development of paper manufacturing from Australian hardwoods, aluminium production, and the utilization of waste products like wool-scouring residues for lanoline. It also stresses the importance of establishing standards of measurement, testing and calibration, and standardisation to support manufacturing and technological advancements. Furthermore, it advocates for a centralised information service to disseminate scientific knowledge effectively, ensuring that Australia can achieve its potential as a prosperous and self-sufficient nation.
