- Abstract
Bungal Dam, a 49 metre high earth and rockfill dam storing 60 million cubic metres of water, has been constructed at a cost of $5 million by the independent West Moorabool Water Board to supply water to the two largest Victorian provincial cities, Ballarat and Geelong. The reasons for establishing the independent Board and its responsibilities are discussed.
The site conditions, hydrological studies and design analyses leading to the selection of site, size and details of the dam are presented, describing some of the more unusual aspects. The paper includes aspects of the construction, particularly its administration, and presents site test data for comparison with data assumed for design. Some details of performance since construction are also included.
One aspect of the project was the speed of completion from formation of the Board to completed project in four years, and means of achieving this are discussed.
