Abstract

The paper is intended to cover, in a very general manner, the present position with regard to the supply of electricity in bulk throughout Australia, particularly with regard to certain outstanding questions connected with interlinking of power stations under Australian conditions. A short statistical resume of the relative magnitude of electric power supply in the various countries of the world is first given, followed by the corresponding data for the Australian States, all the figures being as at the end of the year 1927. The immediate work in hand by the Commonwealth Power Survey Committee is also indicated, particularly in its relation to the standard recommended as the Australian voltage for interlinking, viz., 66,000-volts. The paper also covers immediately outstanding matters in connection with power generation, distribution, and rates for supply, and concludes with particular reference to the electrical development of the manufacturing area of the Newcastle district as a whole. Special stress is laid on the technical difficulties of interlinking relatively small power stations in Australia, and the author has endeavoured to indicate, in general terms, that the value of " hydro-electricity ,, under Australian conditions is relatively insignificant as compared with the proper utilisation of the coal resources of the Commonwealth.
