Abstract

The foundations of a proposed bridge structure on which the author was engaged, provide an interesting problem, in that the caissons rest in and on sand. Since considerable scours may occur, the effect of overturning moments due to horizontal forces is an important factor in the design, and a theoretical investigation was made into the lateral support which might be expected from the sand. Two basic cases are discussed: on the one hand where the pier is heavy and friction may be assumed to occur on the base, and on the other hand a pier which is so light that the friction forces on the base must be considered not significant.
