Abstract

The current shortage of trained manpower has presented problems to the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority. Partial solutions have been obtained by the better use of engineers and scientists, who are being relieved of many tasks which can be undertaken by men of lesser qualifications. These are trained in Authority's in-service training courses, and fall into two groups-those who have recognized educational and experience qualifications and those who essentially have a real desire to undertake a new vocation. Members of the second group are selected upon the basis of ability tests at interview, and prove to be capable of undertaking their new vocation satisfactorily. Good correlations are obtained between ability scores at interview and examination marks, and between ability scores and assessment of subsequent performance, thereby making it possible to predict reliably the ultimate performance of men at the time of interview.
