- Abstract
The author here discusses the action on cement and concrete of various chemicals found in natural waters and in sewage, although paying special attention to the question of sewer corrosion. Reference is made to the chemical composition, not only of Portland cement, but of various of the other modern cements which are now available. As regards Portland cement, the sulphate salts have a highly deleterious effect, and even natural waters of high purity can cause trouble by dissolving the free lime in set cement, as has been experienced in Scandanavia and Scotland. In sewerage work particular care has to be taken to combat the effects of sewer gas and of certain trade wastes.
