Abstract

Lake Bellfield, a reservoir having a capacity of 64,000 ac.ft., was created to provide long-term reserve storage for the Wimmera-Mallee System of stock-and-domestic water supply in north-eastern Victoria.

Belfield dam was constructed on Fyans Creek, near Hall's Gap, a township in the Grampian Mountains, 156 miles west-north-west from Melbourne. The embankment has a central earth core, flanked by transition zones and supported by rockfill shoulders, and rises 180 ft. above its deepest foundation level.

The first part of this symposium describes the geology of the dam site and unusual features of the bedrock.

The second section relates the site factors which influenced the basic concept of the project, and outlines the main design features of its major components.

The third part deals with construction planning, procedures, productivity and unit costs, highlighting rockfill-production problems and the concurrent use of day-labour and contract methods.
