- Description
This paper originated in the Melbourne Division of the Institution.
- Abstract
The paper presents an account of the strengthening and widening of the combined road and railway bridge over the Murray River at Echuca, an important bridge constructed in 1876-1878.
The work was commenced in March, 1925, and was the first serious application of electric welding to the repair and strengthening of a railway bridge.
It is desired to place on record the experience gained, particularly as some 60 bridges in Australia have been strengthened by the same method by other authorities since that date, none of which work has yet been recorded in the Transactions of the Institution.
The subject is dealt with under the following headings: (I) Description of Bridge; (II) Reasons for Strengthening; (III) Clearance; (IV) Grades; (V) Traffic; (VI) Possible Methods of Strengthening; (VII) Tests of Welding on Wrought Iron; (VIII) Inspection of Structure; (IX) Basis for Design, Loads and Working Stresses; (X) Preliminary Design and Estimates, and Capitalised Cost of Different Schemes; (XI) Details of Work carried out; (XII) Field Work; (XIII) Supervision; (XIV) Testing; and (XV) Widening Roadway.
