Abstract

The paper describes the work being carried out at the present time on the Hawthorn Bridge, Melbourne. The main points of note are:
(1) The data ascertained as to the excellent condition of hardwood foundation piles after 73 years' service;
(2) The methods adopted in underpinning the masonry piers; and
(3) The methods adopted in strengthening the lattice girders by electric welding, with particular reference to the procedure control of welding.
