- Abstract
The Chemeca Medal, the most prestigious award given in the chemical engineering profession in Australia, is awarded to the outstanding Australian chemical engineer whose work and activities have attained a standing and maturity which would allow the medallist to present an appropriate plenary lecture at the Chemeca Conference. This year's winner is Prof Maria Skyllas-Kazacos, a professor in the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry at the University of NSW.
Skyllas-Kazacos pioneered the vanadium redox battery, a major breakthrough in energy storage systems and a world first. It has received global attention and has since been patented in Australia, USA and several other countries, as well as being licenced to companies in Japan and Thailand. In simple terms, the vanadium redox battery allows vast amounts of electrical energy to be stored in a liquid. It's a simple technology to produce and has the potential for extensive application across a broad range of uses, from electrically powered vehicles to stationary energy storage systems.
Skyllas-Kazacos has also done significant work with lead acid batteries and aluminium making major contributions to the aluminium industry through the Australasian Aluminium Smelting Technology Workshops. She has won several other awards and distinctions for her work and has over 180 publications to her credit.
