- Abstract
Much trouble was experienced in Newcastle (N.S.W.) Sewered Area owing to the emanation of offensive smells from sewer ventilating shafts. The paper recounts the steps taken to meet the difficulty. Ventilating shafts, with exhaust fans drawing from main sewers, were erected and plant installed at the ventilators to deodorise the sewer gas before discharge to the atmosphere. The first part of the paper deals mainly with the investigation of the extent of the influence of the exhaust fans along the main sewers; the second part with methods of deodorising, and results attained.
