Abstract

This paper outlines a simple and orderly numerical technique to determine the deflected shape of a member in bending. The method assumes either that the curvature at all points of the member is known, or that it can be determined (e.g. from the deflection and the moment-curvature relationship in column buckling problems). The curvature is integrated numerically to give deflections, advancing from boundary conditions assumed
or defined at one point.
The method is illustrated by a number of simple deflection calculations and by two inelastic buckling problems; (a) the effect of cold-bending residual stresses on the buckling strength of a pin-ended steel column of rectangular cross-section; (b) the buckling of eccentrically loaded unreinforced
concrete columns of rectangular cross-section. The last two problems occupy a major part of the paper.
