- Description
This paper, No. 1256, originated in the Sydney Division of The Institution, and was presented before a meeting of the Civil Engineering Branch of that Division on 28th February, 1956.
The author James M. Antill BE MIEAust, is Managing Director of Stresscrete Constructions Pty. Ltd., Sydney.
- Abstract
After briefly introducing the salient features of prestressed concrete as a new construction medium, this paper describes the basic materials required for its use-high tensile steel, anchorage devices, high strength concrete, etc.
This is followed by a short discussion of those stresses induced by the technique itself, and the permissible working stresses to be adopted in design; a plea is made for uniformity of design specifications in Australia.
The paper then describes and illustrates the methods of construction of structures currently of interest to Australian civil engineers (buildings, reservoirs and bridges), and concludes with an analysis of the economic aspects of prestressed concrete in this country, with examples from local sources.
