Abstract

In this paper the author, who is Director of Public Works and Commissioner of Main Roads, Western Australia, reviews the Development of the State of Western Australia by the Engineer. He deals more particularly with the past 40 years and covers a wide field, including railways; harbour works; water supplies; irrigation; land drainage; Perth Metropolitan Water Supply; sewerage; rabbit, proof fencing; lighthouses; and roads and bridges. He reaches the conclusion that the Engineer occupies a prominent and important position in the life of the community - without him there can be no real development.
