Abstract

Ian Jenkin BA Melb is Vice President of the Australian Railway Historical Society Victorian Division.

Over the last three decades Ian has accumulated a significant body of knowledge regarding the early development of the railway in Victoria, considering the social, political and economic context of the evolution of the Victorian Railways as a government department and the impact of events outside of the colony in shaping this development.

With major studies in both History and Politics, Ian's research; along with wide reading on the evolution of the railway in Great Britain, Europe and the United States of America; and his researches tend to focus on a broad picture, which has revealed a range of links that previously been overlooked or misunderstood. Ian was directly involved with the sourcing and preparation of the Bendigo Art Gallery Display for the Bendigo Railway 150th anniversary; and the presentation of two talks, entitled 'Stone Brick and Iron - the building of the Melbourne to Bendigo Railway'; and '90% men the human story of the Melbourne to Bendigo Railway', in 2012.

Inevitably research into this line is linked to the parallel construction of the Geelong to Ballarat line.

Ian's presentation will draw on parts of both presentations mentioned above, with a focus on the influences on the design and construction of both lines.
