- Abstract
William Calder can perhaps best be characterised as the "father of the Country Roads Board". He became the first head of the CRB on its formation in 1913. After more than 100 years the CRB has evolved into Vicroads and Calder is best known for the naming of the Calder Highway after him.
Calder was an engineer with a strong vision for the future of the highway system in Victoria. He was also a hands-on engineer who was often seen riding his horse along the highways inspecting them and planning for the future.
