- Abstract
Railways were not invented in Australia. Like many other things, we have adopted successfully (or partly successfully) something first tried overseas. We have repeated some of the same mistakes, and have adapted some of the successes. The purpose of my brief review is to highlight some of the more significant steps in our railway history, and to assess their significance for the future, since history is of little other than academic value if we do not learn from it.
