Abstract

The special circumstances which led to Australia playing a leading part in the development of the new science of radio astronomy are described. After observational and instrumental breakthroughs were made in the late 1940's and in the 1950's, there was a transition to the "Big Science" era of radio astronomy in which the Parkes Radiotelescope has played a notable part.
