- Abstract
The concept of an aeronautical research laboratory arose in 1937 from Government's concern to extend secondary industry development. The laboratory came into being just as World War II was starting. Early work was concerned with a burgeoning aircraft industry and RAAF problems. Post war, Commonwealth cooperation blossomed, while later, development of weapons such as Malkara, Ikara, Barra, etc, took priority. Throughout the years, work on problems such as lifing of structures and engines continued, while in the present era computer modelling in all fields has become normal. The Laboratories remain an essential handmaiden to defence, and service to the national interest motivates its scientific spirit.
