Abstract

The Port of Newcastle was the forerunner of Australia's bulk materials port systems. It has developed from a primitive beginning in 1801, to become Australia's most diversified bulk handling port. A brief history is provided of the development of Australia's port systems for handling coal, grain, iron ore and sugar.
