- Abstract
Before the ready availability of iron from the mid 19th century, laminated timber arches provided the most economic form of long span bridge construction. However the detailing was poor, and the bridges soon deteriorated. In South Australia significant innovations were made to enhance the durability, but few were built before bridge builders switched to iron. The Angle Vale bridge is the only surviving laminated timber arch bridge in Australia, and was conserved in the nation's bicentennial year. The paper describes the bridge and its conservation.
