- Abstract
In the 25 years which have elapsed since communication satellites were first launched, improvements in launch vehicles and satellites technology have produced a rapid growth in their capability. The first commercial use of space was the international communication service offered by Intelsat. It was followed by the introduction of domestic and maritime satellite systems. This paper reviews the evolution of satellite communications systems, with particular attention to the advances in communications payload technology. It concludes with a more detailed description of Australia's advanced domestic satellite, AUSSAT.
