- Abstract
By the year of the Bicentenary, Brisbane had been settled by Europeans for 164 years. A few thousand Aboriginals occupied the area in the early part of the 19th Century. The total population exceeded one million by the end of the 20th Century. During this time, the area has developed from a natural wilderness to an attractive modern city. We have seen a considerable change in the use and nature of building materials and the techniques used to design and construct buildings. This paper tries to give a brief overview of these changes by reviewing a selection of buildings, bridges and other structures constructed since the first settlement.
