- Abstract
The Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEA) was founded in 1920, and in the process absorbed a number of then existing professional bodies in the various States of the Commonwealth. Professor Prentice, and I set out to collate known information relating to the early Professional Societies existing in Queensland prior to 1920, and to attempt to enlarge on this information by further research. In the process, we were able to confirm that the first such organisation was the Queensland Institute of Mechanical Engineers (QIME). This paper honours the centenary of the foundation of the first Professional Engineering Society established in Queensland. The Queensland Institute of Mechanical Engineers was conceived in about June 1890, and was fully established at a meeting of members on 11 December 1890.
