- Abstract
The South Australian road network has evolved in the period since European settlement to meet the travel demands of the community and the developments in the means of road transport. As a consequence many items with heritage significance can be found in and about the road reserve and indeed in the road itself. This paper explores the nature of these [nonaboriginal] heritage items and reports on an audit undertaken for Transport SA identifying such items and assets within a portion of South Australia's road network. The audit is assisting in their conservation and management. The development of the road network and technologies in South Australia is briefly outlined and the heritage audit process and the benefits derived from the audit described.
