- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to help the observer recognise the several different types of dams and to understand what is hidden inside and underneath them. The paper will provide an overview for laymen on how large dams are designed, built and operated. The authors have selected a number of generally well known dams of different types in order to demonstrate the key design features. Many of the dams used to illustrate this paper have been identified as Australia's heritage dams.
