- Abstract
The Wagga viaduct carries the main Sydney-Melbourne railway across the floodplains on the North and South sides of the bridge over the Murrumbidgee River at Wagga in NSW. These viaducts, extending in total over four miles in length were constructed between 1876 and 1879 of local hardwood. Unfortunately the urgency of the work resulted in much inferior timber being used, which rapidly deteriorated, resulting in a decision being taken in 1896 to replace the timber viaducts with steel piers and plate web girders. The paper describes how this was achieved without interference with the railway timetable.
