- Abstract
Dam spillways are designed to pass an extreme flood known as the design flood. The methods of determining the magnitude of this flood have changed considerably during this century. Many older dams have been subject to a number of revisions of their extreme flood estimates. In some cases the structure of the dam and/or its spillway configuration, have been modified to cope with increasing extreme flood estimates. Burrinjuck Dam has been subjected to increases in extreme flood estimates, and its configuration has been altered as a result. The paper provides a brief history of selected aspects of this process.
