- Abstract
The paper gives a brief account of the last twenty-four years' operating experience of the AAEC's reactor, HIFAR, and the change in its role from support for the development of an indigenous power reactor to radioisotope producer and neutron beam source. A brief review is given of modernisation programs on overseas reactors of the same (DIDO) class. The origin of the current refurbishing program and its implementation via the services of a consultant program manager are explained. The specific major systems to be upgraded and the technical basis for the contemplated modifications are described. Finally, the operating status of the upgraded reactor is stated and some indication is given as to what further 'piecemeal' upgrading work may be undertaken after the current program.
