- Abstract
Evaluation is the essential pre-requisite to the preservation of engineering works or items and yet it is the step which is frequently omitted or passed over lightly. The criteria on which such an evaluation should be made are examined, appropriate procedures are outlined, and the application of the conclusions to assessing the practicability of preservation is discussed. The wide range of possibilities in the forms of preservation which can justifiably be attempted is stressed and procedures for selecting the most appropriate on the basis of the evaluation are considered.
