Abstract

In 1998, I had the privilege of meeting Zihni Buzo in Armidale at a regional EA function. My first impression of him was of a charming, intelligent and proud engineer, who aroused my interest in his working life. Having just offered to help out with the oral history program, that was just starting to get off the ground, in the Newcastle division, I suggested that Zihni would be a good subject to begin with. So, I conducted the interview in his home, when next I was in Armidale. The interview was loosely structured on a life history approach but attempting to focus on his engineering career. Listening to the interview recently, made me realise what a novice I was on engineering matters, but I think the interview demonstrates the rich history of Zihni's background, his outstanding education, unexpected opportunities that Zihni grasped, his passionate and positive approach to life's challenges, his early work as an engineer on water supply and environmental consequences between the 2 World Wars, his migration to Australia and finding work, his appointment to the Oaky River hydro- electric dam project and following its completion, work in 40 different countries for the World Health Organisation (WHO).
