- Abstract
This paper identifies four novel concrete arch bridges constructed in Northern New South Wales (NSW) in the early 20th century. The bridges, their heritage significance and novelty are described and their history recounted. The specific bridges that are cited are: Monier arch bridge over Reads Gully (Moonbi Creek), New England Highway (near Moonbi); concrete barrel arch bridge over Koreelah Creek, Mt Lindsay Road (Tenterfield-Woodenbong); concrete over-arch (bow-string) bridge over Shark Creek, Pacific Highway (near Maclean); and splayed concrete arch bridge over Oakey Creek (near Cobbadah). These bridges represented a significant period of technological change in road bridge construction in NSW and Australia during the early 20th century with the adoption of reinforced concrete. All are extant and two of the four still operate under normal traffic conditions without load or speed limitations. Each of these is novel and unique.
