- Abstract
John Henderson (c1781-1835) was the first Manager of the Coal Division of the Australian Agricultural Co (1825-1835) in Newcastle NSW. He was responsible for the prospecting for and development of the first commercial coal mine in Australia, and the first railway from the pit-head to the Company wharf. During his time with the Company he encountered many difficulties due to the political, bureaucratic and commercial relationships between the London and NSW branches of both the Company and Government, but his technical expertise and results were given unreserved praise. The reports he made of the exploration results are valuable records of early Newcastle, and still used in 2015.
