- Abstract
My theme in this paper is that three technologies, agriculture mining and the metal working industry which supported them, created an environment to support a whole raft of industries in 19th Century South Australia. At the same time South Australia's internal links, with the other Australian colonies and internationally by new communications technologies, including paddle steamers, steam ships, railways and telegraph, provided an environment for this quite extra-ordinary growth and exploitation of new technology. It continued until around Federation when it went into decline.
