- Abstract
The paper describes the organisation, structure, finance and work of the Institution of Civil Engineers' Panel for Historical Engineering Works since its creation in 1970. Its principal achievement has been the assembly of a record of over 2000 engineering works which corporately represent key aspects of civil engineering heritage and history. The principles used to identify and assess a work's suitability for inclusion within the record are described together with the process of preparing an acceptable record. Also included are the ways by which the Panel seeks to disseminate its corporate knowledge both to professionals and the general public; and how it has increasingly become engaged in debates concerning the fate of historic works which are the subjects of repair, re-use or demolition proposals. The paper concludes with reflective observations on the Panel's work to date and how it may continue in the future.
