- Abstract
The Overland Telegraph Line (OT Line) from Port Augusta to Port Darwin was Australia's first national development project and the greatest engineering achievement of the last Century. It is significant for its political, military and economic importance. The route was over country which had just been traversed by John McDouall Stuart and was considered by the Government of the Colony of South Australia to be vital to the opening up of the centre of Australia to pastoral and mining ventures.
