- Abstract
Claremont is a two storey Georgian residence in Newcastle, NSW dating from c.1840. Its conservation and adaptation for re-use involved many engineering challenges in order to provide necessary strengthening while causing least disturbance to the existing fabric. Requirements included underpinning and strengthening of the whole building to resist earthquake loadings. This paper states the work carried out, including technical aspects of the engineering design and relates the work to the principles.
