- Abstract
The paper deals with C.Y. O'Connor's career, his years of maturing experience in New Zealand, where he rose from an assistant engineer's post in Canterbury Province, in 1865, to become Under Secretary for Public Works, and his period subsequently as Engineer in Chief in Western Australia. It draws parallels between O'Connor's work in New Zealand and Western Australia, in the construction of harbour works, pioneer railways and hydraulic schemes through difficult terrain.
