- Abstract
This paper reviews the effect of the 1989 Newcastle Earthquake on heritage structures, and discusses the types and extent of damage that occurred together with the methods of repair and stabilisation that were adopted, with particular reference to the Burra Charter. The need for consideration of heritage (and other) structures in other areas, and their likely damage in future earthquakes is discussed with suggestions on strengthening methods to prevent or minimise such damage. The paper also addresses the problems of immediate response to such disasters by experienced heritage engineers and makes suggestions for the future.
