- Abstract
The Steamship Xantho has provided the ideal testing ground for the biological and electrochemical analysis of a complex wreck site consisting of the lead sulphide ore galena, the cast and wrought iron engine and all the associated copper alloys pertinent to the operation of such a vessel. This paper reports on the use of sacrificial anodes to arrest corrosion and begin conservation insitu and on the stabilisation of the historic steam engine built by Penn of Greenwich in 1861. Metallurgical analysis of the iron and steel combined with electromicroprobe studies of concreted metal reveals not only the work history of the vessel but also the changing microenvironment as the wreck is alternatively buried and exposed.
