- Abstract
The preliminary architectural and engineering rationale that preceded conceptual design of Stage 1 of the Notre Dame University Australia is presented. The re-use of the 130 year old Heritage buildings of J & W Bateman of Fremantle, Western Australia, involved rehabilitating a number of old, fragile rubble limestone and clay brickwork walls. Little guidance is given in the literature and little case history data is available on this type of work. Earthquake activity is thought to have damaged many of the wall structures and a study thereof has shown that mild earthquake events impinging on the greater Perth area are increasing in frequency and possibly in magnitude. Techniques for strengthening the walls are discussed together with preliminary resolution of the important factors involved. The results of a trial involving tie bar pull-out tests in the rubble limestone walls are presented with preliminary indicative core strengths of this masonry. Conclusions are drawn from the work to date on this particular building study which have broader application to and indicate future directions for Heritage buildings in general.
