- Abstract
The paper presents a number of cases where errors have occurred in interpreting the cultural significance of engineering places and artefacts. The sources of the errors are examined and some general conclusions drawn. These include a need for better technological training for the people carrying out the research and making the interpretations, improved databases, and a requirement that major technological sites, works or artefacts scheduled for redevelopment or replacement be subject to a cultural significance investigation when decommissioned.
