- Abstract
This paper gives an example of how the method of citation analysis can be applied to an historical analysis of the engineering literature. It describes why this method was tried and the specific techniques used. The contents of the assembled data base is discussed and the importance of the internal research literature is highlighted. The data base itself covers the period from 1975 to 1914 and it discusses measures of the importance of material in the base. Co-citation analysis is shown to be a useful technique for analysing the implied inter-relations in the base. The work allows Australia's technical contributions in this area to be assembled - and none, from the author's knowledge, were missed - and analysed. It is seen that these were significant. Nevertheless, it was also quite clear that Australia had relied heavily on imported technology and that a decade often passed before an idea had taken firm root. The work also showed how important it was for engineering archives to store the internal report literature.
