- Abstract
The crushing of quartz to liberate the gold it contained began in Victoria within a year of the discovery of alluvial gold. From the first it was normal for quartz to be roasted to make it easier to crush. The earliest crushing devices used in Victoria derived from California and these machines developed into the normal stamp battery with parabolic cams and revolving stamps. Mines operated by Cornishmen or developed with European capital continued to use the less efficient European design of stamp battery for a further thirty-five years in Victoria. The fabrication of stamp batteries in Victorian foundries provided an impetus to the development of a local manufacturing industry.
