- Abstract
The history of the City of Newcastle shows that its origin was due solely to coal, the physical shape of the City and suburbs was determined by coal mining activity and the economic welfare of the region has continually been and still is dependent on coal mining, coal based industry and mining services. The harbour, generally taken for granted, is the result of one hundred and seventy years of work on an "impossible" estuary. Methods of displaying this heritage are discussed.
